Behind every demanding film production, flexibility and reliability are essential. We are always proud to see SONOSAX equipment trusted on major sets where complex routing, multiple sources, and fast-changing scenes leave no room for compromise. Award-winning production sound mixer Ed Novick, whose work has been recognized with 4 Oscars and 2 BAFTAs, recently shared how his SONOSAX SX-ST12 became an indispensable tool during the shooting of Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic.

Once again, my Sonosax SX-ST12 mixing panel was indispensable in shooting a film. This time, it was “Michael”, the Michael Jackson biopic. Music scenes required multiple feeds from the music playback station, in addition to stereo mics for crowd noise, hand held mics for vocal tracking, and lav mics for other dialog. All of these inputs required specific routing to main sends as well as aux sends. Having this kind of flexibility saved me on many occasions. Other scenes (Michael rehearsing “Beat It”, for example) had 10 or more speaking parts (mostly ad lib) and still was accommodated into my 12 input mixer. Having my SX-ST12 on set made mixing this movie so much easier.

By combining the SONOSAX SX-M2D2 with a Dante AVIO AES3 adapter (2 channels in / 2 channels out), the SX-M2D2 can be used as a compact standalone Dante interface for both recording and monitoring.

This setup sends the SX-M2D2 input signal to a Dante network while also allowing the return stream to be monitored through the SX-M2D2 headphone output.

The Dante AVIO adapter is powered via PoE from the network switch and connects to the SX-M2D2 through its AES input and output.

For cabling, several solutions are available: standard XLR to TA3 mini-XLR adapter cables can be ordered from us, wiring information can be provided for custom cables, and, on special request, the Dante AVIO adapter can be supplied pre-modified with mini-XLR connectors for a more compact setup.

After many years of dedication to SONOSAX, Pierre Blanc is now entering a new chapter and will be gradually stepping back from his daily role within the company.

Some of you will remember that Pierre had already left SONOSAX in 2018, before returning in 2021. This time, the transition will take a different form: Pierre will continue to support SONOSAX on a limited basis, working one day per week, while progressively handing over many of his responsibilities.

For many of our users, dealers, distributors, suppliers, and partners around the world, Pierre has been one of the familiar voices and faces of SONOSAX. Through technical sales, customer support, product advice, service coordination, and countless exchanges by email, phone, and in person, he has played an important role in maintaining the close relationship we value with our customers.

His knowledge of the products, his understanding of field recording workflows, and his direct contact with professionals around the world have contributed to the continuity and reputation of SONOSAX. Beyond the commercial and technical aspects, Pierre has also represented a very human side of the company, with relationships often going far beyond a simple business exchange.

We warmly thank Pierre for his loyalty, his work, and his contribution to SONOSAX over all these years. We wish him every success and happiness for the future.

With our most cordial greetings,

Following Pierre Blanc’s transition to a reduced role, Tymofiy Ivanchenko will take over many of his responsibilities, particularly in customer communication, technical support, service coordination, and product-related assistance.

Tymofiy has been part of SONOSAX since the end of 2019, working in the technical department and gradually building strong familiarity with our products, workflows, and customer expectations.

During the last ten months, Tymofiy has been working closely with Pierre in order to ensure a smooth and coherent transition. This period has allowed him to take over ongoing matters progressively, while maintaining the continuity and personal contact that are important to SONOSAX.

Some of you may already have met Tymofiy at the Micro-Salon AFC in Paris or at The Pro Audio Show, where he had the opportunity to exchange directly with users, dealers, and partners.

SONOSAX remains a small and highly specialized company, and this continuity is important to us. Our objective remains the same: to provide precise technical support, honest product advice, and reliable service to our users and partners worldwide.

You can continue to contact SONOSAX through the usual channels for any technical, commercial, or service-related request.

Once again, my Sonosax SX-ST12 mixing panel was indispensable in shooting a film. This time, it was “Michael”, the Michael Jackson biopic.

Firmware Update

A new firmware is also in preparation and is currently undergoing testing. This release will correct some bugs and improve overall stability.

Once testing is complete, it will be available on our website during the month of March.

Please check our website for this update and for the procedure at: https://sonosax.ch/product/sx-r4p/

SONOSAX SX-R4
+
Availability

We are pleased to announce that we are starting a new production run of the SX-R4+, with the first units expected to be available in around six months.

SD Card formatter

As you know, not all SD cards are equal and even new high speed cards may lead to errors (Speed Error).

SD cards are also somehow “ageing” and this error may happen after using cards for a few month only.

We recommend you to reformat your cards on regular basis using the specific SD Card formatter courtesy provided for free download by the root organization “SDcard.org”.

We noticed significant improvements in speed and reliability on pretty old SD cards after using this formatting utility.

For Windows

https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/sd-memory-card-formatter-for-windows-download

For MacOS

https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/sd-memory-card-formatter-for-mac-download

NOTE: For optimal results you must select “Overwrite format”. This is a slow process that takes about one hour to format a 128Gb card. Be patient.

IMPORTANT: After formatting your SD card with this specific SD card formatter, you MUST reformat your cards to UDF format using the formatting utility in the SYSTEM menu of the SX-R4+.

SONOSAX SX-AD8
+
and AVB

A new firmware allows the SX-AD8+ to connected via AVB to the latest MAC (running on the latest MacOS).

Obviously the SX-AD8+ must be equipped with the optional AVB board, part nr 024291.

This firmware is available along with the installation procedure at: https://sonosax.ch/product/sx-ad8/

               SONOSAX part nr 024291

The SONOSAX SX-AD8+ equiped with this AVB board supports PoE on RJ45 connector, it operates at 48, 96 and 192kHz.

More information about the AVB board at: https://www.sonosax.ch/product/024291/

New deliveries of SONOSAX SX-AD8+ automatically include the latest firmware.

IRCAM chooses SONOSAX SX-AD8
+
with DANTE

We are very pleased and honored that IRCAM – Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique – has chosen the SX-AD8+ for their research and developments. Below is what Richard Rentsch and José Miguel Fernández say about their works.

As part of our creative and research project dedicated to human/machine co-improvisation with Somax2 artificial intelligence agents (developed at Ircam, Paris), it is essential to be able to analyze the sound of instruments with a high degree of precision in order to guarantee reliable and musically relevant results in real time.

That’s why we chose the Sonosax SX-AD8+ preamplifier, combined with its Dante extension, for both our studio testing sessions and our live performances.

The remarkable quality of its preamplifiers, the stability of the system, and the portability of the SX-AD8+ allowed for optimal use at two Improtech international festivals, in Tokyo and Paris, as well as during a concert at the Rolex Learning Center at EPFL with pianist Richard Rentsch, in collaboration with José Miguel Fernández and Somax2 AI agents.

CARNET NOIR

Georges Quellet, founder of STELLAVOX, passed away on February 26, 2026.

This man, whom I had the privilege of meeting on several occasions, concealed a profound humanity beneath his initially somewhat austere exterior.

He was as kind as he was approachable, and from the very first moments of our encounters, he showed remarkable generosity of spirit. He knew how to share his convictions and knowledge with infectious enthusiasm, leaving those who knew him with memories of a man of heart and dialogue.

His devices were a source of inspiration to me.

My thoughts go out to his wife, his entire family, and his loved ones.

Jacques Sax

Jeff Wexler

I met Jeff in the 1980s. He was one of the first users of the SONOSAX SX-S. I remember him as a very friendly and welcoming person with a very open mind.

Totally passionate about sound in cinema, Jeff contributed greatly to its development and helped to advance the profession of cinema sound recording thanks to his curious mind. He had an engaging personality that left no one indifferent.

Jeff also knew how to bring people together, notably by creating the website https://jwsoundgroup.net/ a forum and reference site that is the go-to destination for thousands of users and professionals

President’s Note I want to say here that I stand in solidarity with Ukraine, but also with the Russian people. It is the government of Russia that is waging this war that I strongly condemn. Why engage in such atrocities? In my opinion, it is unjustifiable. At a time when most of the world is concerned about pollution and ecology, this war, which devastates lives and cities, is totally senseless. Having had the chance to work with Ukraine and Russia, I am very saddened by this tearing apart that has nothing to do with these two peoples.

We now go further and announce that our SONOSAX SX-AD8+ is compatible with the ANUBIS thanks to the RAVENNA/DANTE link in AES67 mode. This link is unfortunately limited to 48kHz because of a restriction in the software of the Dante card in AES67 mode. As both devices allow it, we do not despair of supporting 96kHz or even 192kHz in the future. It is always a pleasure for us to collaborate with other manufacturers (in the past Beyer Dynamic, Weiss Audio and more recently Sound Devices and even a small one with PSI).

Dear customer, partner and friend,

Yes, we are experiencing one of the most bizarre period since a year and a half now, to the point that I forgot the SONONEWS this last summer!

Like many other manufacturers of electronic devices, we are also very busy sourcing components, redoing price calculations, trying to get correct shipping prices, etc.

It is not the funniest activity, and moreover, it forced us to postpone for 6 months the end of the development of our SX-RX8+ … We do not give a deadline for deliveries, which depends on certain suppliers who do not give us any guarantee.

We will publish in the next few days the new price list with, unfortunately, increases …

Trade shows

We will be exhibiting at the IBC in Amsterdam, December 3-6, 2021, hoping that many of you will visit us.

SONOSAX SX PLUS serie

Our SONOSAX SX-R4+ and SX-AD8+ are now available with the DANTE / AES67 card. The addition of the card in the SX-R4+ must imperatively be done at SONOSAX. The addition of the card in the SX-AD8+ can be done at some of our agents or at SONOSAX.

The corresponding software for the SX-R4+ is: V4.0BETA if the SX-R4+ is equipped with the DANTE / AES card, and V3.75 for the SX-R4+ without the DANTE card.

The SX-AD8+ software is compatible with the DANTE / AES card.

Our SONOSAX SX-RX8+ will be compatible, in addition to the brands outlined in our SONONEWS this spring, also with the new SHURE ADX5D receiver.

Our SONOSAX SX-LC8+ has been out of stock for 2 months, victim of its success, in particular thanks to the compatibility with SOUND DEVICES in USB mode. We will start new deliveries at the end of November and in order of orders received.

Analog is not dead

This year we delivered several SONOSAX SX-ES to folley recording studios. This superb little analog console, with optional digital output, is becoming the standard for this application all over the world.

Here above is an installation with our SONOSAX SX-DD2, several parts of which were delivered this year, mainly for use in stereo systems, shown here with a pair of SONOSAX SX-ADN2A speakers. Note that this device is produced in limited quantities, once again, due to the problems of acquiring key components. It will probably become a “collector”!

FILMING WITH THE SONOSAX SX-R4 plus

The film “Klammer, Chasing the Line” tells the story of skier Franz Klammer at the 1976 Olympic Games, the preparation and the pressure before the race. He was only a little faster than his main competitor, Swiss skier Bernhard Russi.

Half of the film took place on the original 1976 ski slope in Tyrol, Austria. The other half was shot in a studio in Vienna.

My first idea was to build two setups, small and light equipment for all mountain scenes, where it had the sparkle of documentary filming. And a larger sound card setup for studio situations.

But shortly after having the Sonosax SX-R4+ in my hands, I decided to do the whole movie with this little powerhouse.

Its flexible design made it perfect for this movie. It’s small, lightweight, low power consumption, so there’s no need to carry a lot of batteries with you.

A big plus was the LC8+ and its small and light design. This gave me the perfect opportunity to have an 8 fader linear expansion on the mountain. For the studio setup, I just connected a second LC8+ to have an extension of not 8, but 16 channels.

The simple and clean design of the SX-R4+ makes it very easy to control even when wearing gloves.

And one thing I like the most is that there is no USB connector on the device. Each connection is made with a solid connector.

Entering the metadata of this machine is very simple and does not require the use of an external keyboard.

Trade shows

Analog is not dead

We are pleased to show you the final version of this long awaited accessory. It is not exactly a Superslot nor a Unislot, let’s say a Minislot! For reasons of weight and size, it is smaller, lighter, and includes minimal mechanical parts.

It does not have an antenna splitter and does not allow the control of receivers by serial bus.

It can hold the following receivers, depending on the mounting plate and the cable set to be ordered separately:

– Wisycom MCR42 with BPA42-IKSS adapter

The slate microphone can also be assigned, or output on a separate connector.

It includes a slot for a 98Wh battery that can power the receivers, the SX-RX8+ and also a recorder, such as the SX-R4+.

President’s Note

Dear customers, dear partners and dear friends,

Let’s forget about this year!

Let’s talk about sounds and the future!

I would like to thank you all for your loyalty, your comments which keep us progressing constantly. I also thank the entire SONOSAX team for the remarkable work accomplished during this eventful year.

Happy New Year,

Jacques Sax

SONOSAX SX-DD2

We are pleased to announce the start of deliveries for the coming spring.

This device that we had already spoke about in previous SONONEWS is the result of our many years of research in the professional field, applied to home use.
This converter pre-amplifier has the particularity of working in 2 fields, either analog or digital.
When an analog source is connected, the signal remains analog until the analog output. In parallel, this signal is also digitized, and is available on all digital outputs, namely AES, Spdif, Optical and USB.

This last output allows connection to a computer. This allows, among other things, to digitize your vinyls with high definition.
During our tests of this device, we measured frequencies up to 40kHz, which requires sampling of at least 96kHz to record all the harmonics of a vinyl.

It is optionally available with 19-inch adapters and an eRED-MOD (UpnP / DLNA) module for networking.

The price of this device is set excluding VAT at CHF 6,300. We are pleased to offer this device, which will be made in limited quantities, at the special subscription price of CHF 3,900.- HT, transport included throughout the planet.

To benefit from this price, we ask you for a deposit of CHF 300.- for the reservation. These conditions are valid until the end of March 2021. Contact us on: sonosax@sonosax.ch

Status of old products

There is no longer any service on the SONOSAX SX-PR, SX-M2, SX-T, STELLADAT, JM-3A and FD-A100.
For the MINIR and SX-R4, maintenance is ensured but we recommend replacing the hard drive with an SSD.
The service on the SONOSAX SX-S, the mixer which launched SONOSAX and which was produced from 1982 to 1998, is now coming to an end. Some essential spare parts are no longer available at all, notably the faders and gain knobs. Allow us to draw your attention to the few new modules on our clearance list and to the caution to be taken with any purchase of one of these mixers on the second-hand market. Make sure that it is in perfect condition because we will not necessarily be able to ensure, on our side, any repairs.

Current products

The SONOSAX SX-ES and SX-ST series mixers are still in production.

Warning: the AD module for the ES is available, but it is temporarily unavailable for the SX-ST and the RECORDER module is no longer available at all.
The SONOSAX SX-R4 + series is constantly evolving. In addition to users in film and documentary, we have more and more clients in classical music, jazz and others.

Our little SONOSAX SX-M2D2 is very successful, with multiple applications. It has truly become the Swiss army knife of sound and is widely used for making ambient sounds, sound cards for digitizing analog sources, and even for web conferencing.

Coming products

The SX-RX8+, mini SUPERSLOT will soon complete the SX-R4 + series. We hope to be able to release it sometime next summer.

Dante

The DANTE option is available for the SONOSAX SX-AD8 +, i.e. 8 DANTE outputs, as well as for the SONOSAX SX-R4 +. This option allows the use of 16 channels in total, for example 8 inputs 8 outputs, or 12 inputs 4 outputs, etc. Check from time to time for information and updates on our site.

Repairs

Their long lifespan is one of the characteristics of SONOSAX devices and we need more and more time devoted to maintenance. To limit it and reduce costs, we ask you to give us, imperatively, the following informations during any request : the serial number, the date of acquisition and the software version of the device.
Warning : Our recorders have a lithium battery to maintain the Time Code. For maintenance reasons, be sure to change it every 5 years.

Website

Take the time to consult our new “media” tab from time to time. It will be fueled, among other things, by user experiences.

Archiving sound with the SONOSAX SX-M2D2

” Working since 2014 in close collaboration with Professor Jean Malaurie (anthropogeographer specializing in the Arctic), I have been led to inventory and digitize his sound recordings, the fruit of a 70-year career in the Far North. More than 200 audio media (cassettes, mini-cassettes and magnetic tapes) were carefully stored at his home, waiting to be indexed, but also and above all to be saved. Since these media have a limited lifespan, care should be taken to ensure that they are kept and made available for publishing and scientific research. Following the establishment of a joint project between the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and the University of Versailles, this year I undertook the digitization and classification of unpublished medias, work and conference recordings, produced for example in Greenland, Canada, France and the far north of Siberia.

To do this work, I used a device that I normally dedicate to field recordings for my research during expeditions and missions in island Patagonia: the SX-M2D2. Connected in mini-XLR to the analog audio output of the Denon DRW-580 cassette player (loaned by one of my affiliated laboratories: Lutherie Acoustique Musique (LAM) of the Jean Le Rond d’Alembert Institute, Sorbonne University) , I was able to recover the sound data on my computer, thanks to the USB output of the SX-M2D2.

There is no doubt that the future availability of these recordings will be an important contribution for a good number of enthusiasts and researchers, but also for the descendants of the Inuit informants of Jean Malaurie, some having for example accompanied him in 1951 until north geomagnetic pole, an expedition that they were five to carry out, by dog sled. ”

Lauriane Lemasson is a doctoral researcher in acoustics, ethnomusicology and geography at Sorbonne University (Paris). His studies focus on the relations between indigenous peoples and their territories in the extreme south of Patagonia. She has published, among other things, a first acoustic study of a Selk’nam ritual site named Hain, demonstrating the sonic specificities necessary for the choice of place.
