SONOSAX SX-ST12 on the Set of Michael

Behind every demanding film production, flexibility and reliability are essential. We are always proud to see SONOSAX equipment trusted on major sets where complex routing, multiple sources, and fast-changing scenes leave no room for compromise. Award-winning production sound mixer Ed Novick, whose work has been recognized with 4 Oscars and 2 BAFTAs, recently shared how his SONOSAX SX-ST12 became an indispensable tool during the shooting of Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic.

Once again, my Sonosax SX-ST12 mixing panel was indispensable in shooting a film. This time, it was “Michael”, the Michael Jackson biopic. Music scenes required multiple feeds from the music playback station, in addition to stereo mics for crowd noise, hand held mics for vocal tracking, and lav mics for other dialog. All of these inputs required specific routing to main sends as well as aux sends. Having this kind of flexibility saved me on many occasions. Other scenes (Michael rehearsing “Beat It”, for example) had 10 or more speaking parts (mostly ad lib) and still was accommodated into my 12 input mixer. Having my SX-ST12 on set made mixing this movie so much easier.

SONOSAX SX-M2D2 meets Dante

SONOSAX SX-M2D2 with Dante AVIO adapter, modified with 2x TA-3F

By combining the SONOSAX SX-M2D2 with a Dante AVIO AES3 adapter (2 channels in / 2 channels out), the SX-M2D2 can be used as a compact standalone Dante interface for both recording and monitoring.

This setup sends the SX-M2D2 input signal to a Dante network while also allowing the return stream to be monitored through the SX-M2D2 headphone output.

The Dante AVIO adapter is powered via PoE from the network switch and connects to the SX-M2D2 through its AES input and output.

For cabling, several solutions are available: standard XLR to TA3 mini-XLR adapter cables can be ordered from us, wiring information can be provided for custom cables, and, on special request, the Dante AVIO adapter can be supplied pre-modified with mini-XLR connectors for a more compact setup.

After many years of dedication to SONOSAX, Pierre Blanc is now entering a new chapter and will be gradually stepping back from his daily role within the company.

Some of you will remember that Pierre had already left SONOSAX in 2018, before returning in 2021. This time, the transition will take a different form: Pierre will continue to support SONOSAX on a limited basis, working one day per week, while progressively handing over many of his responsibilities.

For many of our users, dealers, distributors, suppliers, and partners around the world, Pierre has been one of the familiar voices and faces of SONOSAX. Through technical sales, customer support, product advice, service coordination, and countless exchanges by email, phone, and in person, he has played an important role in maintaining the close relationship we value with our customers.

His knowledge of the products, his understanding of field recording workflows, and his direct contact with professionals around the world have contributed to the continuity and reputation of SONOSAX. Beyond the commercial and technical aspects, Pierre has also represented a very human side of the company, with relationships often going far beyond a simple business exchange.

We warmly thank Pierre for his loyalty, his work, and his contribution to SONOSAX over all these years. We wish him every success and happiness for the future.

Continuity at SONOSAX

Tymofiy Ivanchenko at Micro-salon AFC Paris

Following Pierre Blanc’s transition to a reduced role, Tymofiy Ivanchenko will take over many of his responsibilities, particularly in customer communication, technical support, service coordination, and product-related assistance.

Tymofiy has been part of SONOSAX since the end of 2019, working in the technical department and gradually building strong familiarity with our products, workflows, and customer expectations.

During the last ten months, Tymofiy has been working closely with Pierre in order to ensure a smooth and coherent transition. This period has allowed him to take over ongoing matters progressively, while maintaining the continuity and personal contact that are important to SONOSAX.

Some of you may already have met Tymofiy at the Micro-Salon AFC in Paris or at The Pro Audio Show, where he had the opportunity to exchange directly with users, dealers, and partners.

SONOSAX remains a small and highly specialized company, and this continuity is important to us. Our objective remains the same: to provide precise technical support, honest product advice, and reliable service to our users and partners worldwide.

SONOSAX SX-M2D2 rencontre Dante

SONOSAX SX-M2D2 avec adaptateur Dante AVIO, modifié avec 2x TA-3F

En combinant le SONOSAX SX-M2D2 avec un adaptateur Dante AVIO AES3 (2 canaux en entrée / 2 canaux en sortie), le SX-M2D2 peut être utilisé comme interface Dante autonome compacte, à la fois pour l’enregistrement et le monitoring.

Cette configuration permet d’envoyer le signal d’entrée du SX-M2D2 vers un réseau Dante, tout en permettant de monitorer le flux de retour via la sortie casque du SX-M2D2.

L’adaptateur Dante AVIO est alimenté en PoE par le switch réseau et se connecte au SX-M2D2 via ses entrées et sorties AES.

Pour le câblage, plusieurs solutions sont disponibles : des câbles adaptateurs standard XLR vers TA3 mini-XLR peuvent être commandés directement chez nous, les informations de câblage peuvent être fournies pour des câbles personnalisés, et, sur demande spéciale, l’adaptateur Dante AVIO peut être fourni pré-modifié avec des connecteurs mini-XLR pour une configuration plus compacte.

Tymofiy Ivanchenko au Micro-Salon AFC Paris

À la suite du passage de Pierre Blanc à un rôle réduit, Tymofiy Ivanchenko reprendra une grande partie de ses responsabilités, notamment en matière de communication client, de support technique, de coordination du service et d’assistance liée aux produits.

Tymofiy fait partie de SONOSAX depuis la fin de l’année 2019, au sein du département technique, où il a progressivement développé une solide familiarité avec nos produits, nos méthodes de travail et les attentes de nos clients.

Au cours des dix derniers mois, Tymofiy a travaillé étroitement avec Pierre afin d’assurer une transition fluide et cohérente. Cette période lui a permis de reprendre progressivement les dossiers en cours, tout en maintenant la continuité et le contact personnel qui sont importants pour SONOSAX.

Certains d’entre vous ont peut-être déjà rencontré Tymofiy au Micro-Salon AFC à Paris ou au The Pro Audio Show, où il a eu l’occasion d’échanger directement avec des utilisateurs, revendeurs et partenaires.

Merci Daniel !

Depuis des décennies les utilisateurs de SONOSAX remportent des César, Bafta, Oscar et autres distinctions, pour la production du son de films.

Cette année, c’est différent.

Le jeune musicien Daniel Blumberg a composé toute la musique du film The Brutalist, et il a également enregistré toutes ces compositions avec un enregistreur SONOSAX SX-R4+ et un pré-amplificateur micro SONOSAX SX-AD8+. Cette superbe musique est totalement acoustique et il s’est beaucoup déplacé pour enregistrer certains musiciens chez eux, d’autres dans un club de jazz, ou encore dans le cirque naturel de la carrière de marbre de Carrare.

Très proche de Brady Corbet, Daniel a créé la musique en suivant le déroulement du film. Certaines phrases musicales remplacent carrément des bruitages de machines, par exemple, avec un piano préparé…

Daniel a également utilisé un SONOSAX SX-M2D2 pour travailler dans l’avion, sur son ordinateur.

Nous sommes très fiers d’avoir contribué, modestement et de loin, à cette épopée. La manière de travailler de Daniel exploite au maximum les possibilités de nos appareils, très hautes qualités musicales, portabilité, fonctionnement sur batteries… une sublimation!

Ce travail exceptionnel s’est vu récompensé par le BAFTA et par l’Oscar de la meilleure musique de film.

Nous avons un autre client, Paul Sissener de DCLR studio en Suisse.

Depuis quelques années, il travaille avec les SONOSAX SX-R4+ et SX-AD8+ pour des prises de son. Il enregistre régulièrement, entre autres, à la Cathédrale de Lausanne.

Récemment, il a complété son studio avec notre SONOSAX SX-DD2 pour le monitoring.

Carnet noir : Chris Newman

Nous avons appris récemment le décès de Chris Newman, célèbre ingénieur du son aux USA.

Juste après avoir reçu son Oscar pour le film de Milos Forman en 1984, il nous a approché et a fait l’aquisition d’une table de mixage SONOSAX SX-S. Il nous avait demandé quelques modifications pour être au plus près de sa manière de travailler.

Il a ensuite fait de nombreux films, entre autres Le patient anglais et le Silence des Agneaux, tous deux couronnés d’un Oscar.

Quelques années plus tard, il nous avait commandé une 2ème SONOSAX SX-S, son originale étant bien usée…

Chris était un personnage très attachant et d’une grande générosité. Il a transmis son savoir et son expérience à de nombreux jeunes, dans différentes écoles.

Nos meilleures pensées vont à ses proches et à sa famille.

Thank you Daniel!

For decades, SONOSAX users have been winning César, Bafta, Oscar and other awards for film sound production.

This year is different

Young musician Daniel Blumberg composed all the music for the film The Brutalist, and he also recorded it all with a SONOSAX SX-R4+ recorder and a SONOSAX SX-AD8+ microphone pre-amplifier. This superb music is totally acoustic. What’s more, Daniel travelled extensively to record some musicians at home, others in a jazz club, or in the natural circus of the Carrara marble quarry.

Very close to Brady Corbet, Daniel created the music as the film unfolded. Some musical phrases even replace machine sounds, for example, with a prepared piano…

Daniel also used a SONOSAX SX-M2D2 to work on his computer while on the plane.

We are very proud to have modestly contributed, and from afar, to this epic. Daniel’s way of working makes the most of the possibilities offered by our equipment, with its high musical quality, portability and battery operation – a sublimation!

This exceptional work was awarded the BAFTA and the Oscar for best film score.

We recently learned of the death of Chris Newman, a famous sound engineer in the USA.

Just after receiving his Oscar for Milos Forman’s film in 1984, he approached us and purchased a SONOSAX SX-S mixer. He asked us for a few modifications to be as close as possible to his way of working.

He then made many films, including The English Patient and The Silence of the Lambs, both of which won an Oscar.

A few years later, he ordered a second SONOSAX SX-S from us, his original being very worn out…

Chris was a very endearing and generous character. He passed on his knowledge and experience to many young people in different schools.

Our best thoughts go out to his loved ones and his family.

Comme beaucoup d’autres, nous avons été attristés d’apprendre le décès de Quincy Jones.

Il nous laisse un héritage musical incroyable de compositions, d’arrangements, d’albums et de concerts dans un large spectre musical, que je ne tenterai même pas de résumer.

Il nous laisse également le souvenir d’un concert unique au 25e Festival de Jazz de Montreux, le seul où Quincy Jones dirigeait Miles Davis, accompagné de 2 big bands.

Cette prestation, enregistrée le 8 juillet 1991, fut l’un des derniers concerts de Miles Davis, décédé peu après, le 28 septembre 1991.

Ce concert exceptionnel, comme tous les concerts enregistrés au Casino de Montreux lors de cette édition, a été capté grâce à 48 canaux de préamplis micro SONOSAX FD-M4. Soit jusqu’à 48 micros sur scène connectés au rack SONOSAX, avec les sorties principales des préamplis connectées directement à l’enregistreur 48 pistes SONY PCM3348, les sorties secondaires connectées à la console de mixage du Mountain Studio.

Ce système permettait à l’assistant studio de gérer le gain des préamplis, tandis que David Richards, l’ingénieur du son réputé du Mountain Studio, pouvait se concentrer sur le mixage stéréo. Il est décédé le 20 décembre 2013.

Le regretté David Richards, qui a travaillé avec David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Iggy Pop, Chris Rea et bien d’autres, et fut également co-producteur pour Queen, avait grandement apprécié ce système d’enregistrement.

C’est une immense satisfaction pour SONOSAX d’avoir participé activement à cet enregistrement d’anthologie.

Je tiens particulièrement à vous remercier et à vous dire combien j’aime enregistrer la vie en milieu naturel avec votre matériel. Les préamplificateurs SX-R4+ délivrent des émotions sonores puissantes, avec des timbres, des dynamiques et des niveaux de bruit merveilleux, dans le royaume du silence… Avec Aurélia Frey, photographe et auteur, nous sommes partis en Islande en avril et mai 2024 pendant 40 jours, sur les traces des pêcheurs bretons partis de Paimpol pour pêcher la morue dans les eaux glacées d’Islande.

Nous avons enregistré et photographié, de l’aube à la tombée de la nuit, tous les paysages et décors qui ont attiré notre attention. Tout ce matériel de qualité, correctement protégé, câblé et alimenté, a prouvé sa fiabilité au pays des glaciers !

Je reviens récemment d’un voyage d’enregistrement sonore de film en Zambie et je voulais dire à quel point mon enregistreur s’est bien comporté dans des conditions très difficiles. Le temps était très chaud et sec avec des nuages ​​de poussière granuleuse partout sur mon équipement, mais mon SX-R4, à l’intérieur de son étui, était le plus fiable.

L’analogique n’est pas mort

TONHAUS à Hambourg/Allemagne, une maison de production audio spécialisée dans l’enregistrement vocal, le sound design et la production musicale pour les spots publicitaires, a récemment fait l’acquisition d’un SONOSAX SX-VT16.

Manfred Brunwey, PDG de TONHAUS, dont la discographie est impressionnante, est également musicien, ingénieur et producteur, et a exploité plusieurs studios d’enregistrement, de mixage et de post-production. Parallèlement à ses activités en studio, il enregistre et produit de la musique jazz, et recherchait une table de mixage qui lui offrirait un véritable son analogique.

Quelques essais avec le SONOSAX SX-ST l’ont rapidement convaincu que c’était le son qu’il recherchait. Il a donc opté pour un SONOSAX SX-VT avec plus de canaux d’entrée que le SX-ST.

La petite taille et le faible poids du SX-VT, qui le rend facile à déplacer et à installer sur place, sont également des atouts qui ont contribué au choix de Manfred Brunwey et Horst Püttjer.

Un grand merci également à Zeigermann Audio à Hambourg, qui a parfaitement joué son rôle de distributeur.

ARRI a récemment annoncé la sortie de la petite et légère caméra ALEXA 265, destinée à révolutionner la cinématographie 65 mm. Le boîtier de l’ALEXA 265 est basé sur celui de l’ALEXA 35 et est donc compatible avec le kit d’accessoires de l’ALEXA 35, offrant de nombreuses options de montage, notamment le préamplificateur SONOSAX AEM-1.

Like many others, we were saddened to learn of the death of Quincy Jones. 

He leaves us an incredible musical legacy of compositions, arrangements, albums, and concerts across a wide musical spectrum, which I won’t even attempt to summarize.

He also leaves us with the memory of a unique concert at the 25th Montreux Jazz Festival, the only one in which Quincy Jones conducted Miles Davis, accompanied by 2 big bands.

This performance, recorded on July 8, 1991, was one of the last concerts for Miles Davis, who passed soon after on September 28, 1991.

This exceptional concert, along with all the concerts recorded at the Casino de Montreux during this edition, was captured using 48 channels of SONOSAX FD-M4 microphone preamplifiers. That is, up to 48 microphones on stage connected to the SONOSAX rack, with main pre-amplifier outputs connected directly to the 48-track SONY PCM3348 recorder, secondary outputs connected to the Mountain Studio mixing console.

This system allowed the studio assistant to manage the gain of the preamps, while David Richards, Mountain Studio’s renowned sound engineer, could concentrate on the stereo mix. He died on December 20, 2013.

The late David Richards, who worked with David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Iggy Pop, Chris Rea, and many others, and was also a co-producer for Queen, had greatly appreciated this recording system.

It’s immensely satisfying for SONOSAX to have played an active part in this anthology recording.

Our thoughts are with Quincy’s family, friends and loved ones.

I would particularly like to thank you and tell you how much I enjoy recording life in natural environments with your equipment. The SX-R4+ preamplifiers deliver powerful sonic emotions, with wonderful timbres, dynamics and noise levels, in the realms of silence….. With Aurélia Frey, Photographer and Author, we travelled to Iceland in April and May 2024 for 40 days, following in the footsteps of the Breton fishermen who left Paimpol to fish for cod in the icy waters of Iceland.

We recorded and photographed, from before dawn to nightfall, all the landscapes and settings that caught our eye. All this high-quality equipment, properly protected, wired and powered, has proved its reliability in glacier country!

I’ve recently returned from a film sound recording trip to Zambia and wanted to say how well my recorder performed in very challenging conditions. The weather was very hot and dry with clouds of gritty dust all over my equipment, however my SX-R4, inside it’s case was most reliable.

Analog is not dead

TONHAUS   in Hamburg/Germany, an audio production house specializing in voice recording, sound design and music production for commercials, recently acquired a SONOSAX SX-VT16.

TONHAUS managing Manfred Brunwey, whose discography is impressive, is also a musician, engineer and producer and has operated several recording, mixing and post-production studios.

Together with Horst Püttjer, both of whom have shared a passion for the best sound recordings for many decades, Horst has his roots in studio and communications engineering, it was decided: In addition to studio activities, to record and produce live again, they were looking for a mixer that would give them a real analog sound. A few attempts with the SONOSAX SX-ST quickly convinced them that this was the sound they were looking for.

So they decided on a SONOSAX SX-VT with more input channels than the SX-ST. The small size and light weight of the SX-VT, which makes it easy to transport and install on site, are further advantages that contributed to Manfred Brunwey and Horst Püttjer’s decision

ARRI recently announced the small, lightweight ALEXA 265 camera, destined to revolutionize 65mm cinematography. The ALEXA 265 housing is based on that of the ALEXA 35, and is therefore compatible with the ALEXA 35 accessory set, offering many mounting options, including the SONOSAX AEM-1 preamplifier.

Since the beginnings of SONOSAX in 1977, I’ve been extremely privileged to work with Ateliers Du Nord in Lausanne.

Together with Antoine Cahen, we designed the famous SONOSAX SX-S mixer, whose design and quality earned it an almost instant reputation in the cinema industry, particularly in the USA.

Antoine is known to the general public for designing Nespresso machines, Laura Star, his ADN watches, an educational music box, and many other products.

He was awarded the Grand Prix de la Fondation vaudoise pour la culture (FVPC) on 4 November, a well-deserved prize!

SONOSAX and lead time

After the difficult period with Covid and the shortage of components, the situation has improved considerably and we have finally been able to stabilise our production.
Main products are now in stock or with lead times of approx 1 week to 10 days.
Mixing console and special versions require between 1 and 2 months.

SONOSAX SX-RX8+

Available since last summer, the SX-RX8+ is not exactly a Superslot or a Unislot, we call it Minislot !

Built with a minimum of mechanical parts to keep it small and light, it weighs around 900gr with 2 receivers and a removable 98Wh smart battery that keeps the whole system running for a good day of work.

The SX-RX8+ can hold 2 receivers feeding the recorder with up to 8 digital channels (AES31). When connected to the SX-R4+ the 8 rotary knobs can be set in either Gain of Fader mode to control the 8 audio tracks on the recorder. Their Push On switches can be freely assigned by the user to recall specific functions.

As on the SX-LC8+ the SX-RX8+ provides with a USB port carrying a MIDI protocol that can control external devices such as the Sound Devices for example.

SONOSAX SX-DD2

A new firmware has been released for the SX-DD2, offering the possibility of cutting the main output independently of the headphone output.

ARRI / SONOSAX AEM-1

The first feedbacks on the AEM-1 are unanimous in regards to its unprecedented high sound quality. Also much appreciated is its ergonomic design, perfectly matching the camera body without adding much weight and without interfering with the camera operation.
For most ALEXA 35 users, AEM-1 is a game-changer, particularly for small-sized crew or solo operation.

Chris Price

A sound engineer since 1974, then founder of Ambient Recording in Germany, a company manufacturing carbon fiber booms and time code products, he created the company Cinesonics in Portugal in 2006 with his friend Joaquim Pinto.

He was a figure in audio, always in a good mood and ready to joke about anything.
For several years, passionate about oenology, he and his wife had, since 2004, given new life to a wine estate, Cortem, north of Lisbon. This area was his retirement.

I contacted him quite by chance, in September 2018 while I was sailing in Portugal. I was at the Peniche Marina, very close to Chris who was a few dozen kilometers away.

We met at the Marina, and we spent a memorable day together, visiting its region, tasting its wines, some of which won medals, then its wine estate.

That was the last time I saw him, and it is with great sadness that he passed away on November 11th of this year.

All my thoughts are with his loved ones and family.

We are very pleased to learn that Tony Johnson was the production sound mixer on AVATAR, The Way of the Water, for which he used his SONOSAX SX-ST, as he did for the first Avatar.
Tony, who received numerous awards and nominations, acquired his SX-ST mixer in 2005 and immediately used it on The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Tony says:

I used my SONOSAX SX-ST for all of my work on many movies since 17 years.
I have resisted going to a control surface as my mixer as I think the SX-ST offers so much more flexibility and being able to route anything anywhere while rolling cameras and not having to go through a menu means real time adjustments on the fly are possible. 
It was the perfect choice for Avatar-Way of Water.

As Tony mentioned, his 17 years old SX-ST mixer was engaged in countless number of major productions, which for us Sonosax is not only a proof of reliability and durability, but also a source of great pride and motivation to continue manufacturing outstanding and long lasting audio equipments.

Visit from Ed Novick

It is always a pleasure to receive our customers.

In October, Mr. Ed Novick, one of our other very good and loyal customers, visited us, bringing one his second SX-ST mixers in for a service.

As his T-shirt proudly states, Ed claims to be SONOSAX’s Longest Continuous Customer! Maybe we should open a contest on that subject.

He started with a SONOSAX SX-S in the early 80’s and now has two SONOSAX SX-ST mixers. An 8 channel one that he bought in 2008 and is still in use. And more recently a 12 channel which he acquired in 2017.

Ed also received several awards, among others an Oscar for Inception in 2011 – and numerous nominations for his work on TV series and feature films as production sound mixer.

Ed is one of those cheerful, friendly, fun people you want to make a long-term friend of.

Carnet noir – Michel BUHLER

In the years 1974 to 1977, before the foundation of SONOSAX, I worked with many artists as a sound mixer and sometimes for the lighting as well.

Among them was Michel Buhler who sadly passed away on November 7th 2022. Michel, born in 1945, was a Swiss singer, writer, poet and composer.

I had the chance to make the sound for him, accompanied by Léon Francioli, double bass player (deceased in 2016) and Nono Muller, accordion player (deceased in 2014)…

It was by working with all these musicians that I learned the “sound” that I then became interested in magnifying.

I would like to pay tribute to this trio of musicians with whom I had some incredible moments.
