Behind every demanding film production, flexibility and reliability are essential. We are always proud to see SONOSAX equipment trusted on major sets where complex routing, multiple sources, and fast-changing scenes leave no room for compromise. Award-winning production sound mixer Ed Novick, whose work has been recognized with 4 Oscars and 2 BAFTAs, recently shared how his SONOSAX SX-ST12 became an indispensable tool during the shooting of Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic.

Once again, my Sonosax SX-ST12 mixing panel was indispensable in shooting a film. This time, it was “Michael”, the Michael Jackson biopic. Music scenes required multiple feeds from the music playback station, in addition to stereo mics for crowd noise, hand held mics for vocal tracking, and lav mics for other dialog. All of these inputs required specific routing to main sends as well as aux sends. Having this kind of flexibility saved me on many occasions. Other scenes (Michael rehearsing “Beat It”, for example) had 10 or more speaking parts (mostly ad lib) and still was accommodated into my 12 input mixer. Having my SX-ST12 on set made mixing this movie so much easier.

SONOSAX SX-M2D2 meets Dante

SONOSAX SX-M2D2 with Dante AVIO adapter, modified with 2x TA-3F

By combining the SONOSAX SX-M2D2 with a Dante AVIO AES3 adapter (2 channels in / 2 channels out), the SX-M2D2 can be used as a compact standalone Dante interface for both recording and monitoring.

This setup sends the SX-M2D2 input signal to a Dante network while also allowing the return stream to be monitored through the SX-M2D2 headphone output.

The Dante AVIO adapter is powered via PoE from the network switch and connects to the SX-M2D2 through its AES input and output.

For cabling, several solutions are available: standard XLR to TA3 mini-XLR adapter cables can be ordered from us, wiring information can be provided for custom cables, and, on special request, the Dante AVIO adapter can be supplied pre-modified with mini-XLR connectors for a more compact setup.

After many years of dedication to SONOSAX, Pierre Blanc is now entering a new chapter and will be gradually stepping back from his daily role within the company.

Some of you will remember that Pierre had already left SONOSAX in 2018, before returning in 2021. This time, the transition will take a different form: Pierre will continue to support SONOSAX on a limited basis, working one day per week, while progressively handing over many of his responsibilities.

For many of our users, dealers, distributors, suppliers, and partners around the world, Pierre has been one of the familiar voices and faces of SONOSAX. Through technical sales, customer support, product advice, service coordination, and countless exchanges by email, phone, and in person, he has played an important role in maintaining the close relationship we value with our customers.

His knowledge of the products, his understanding of field recording workflows, and his direct contact with professionals around the world have contributed to the continuity and reputation of SONOSAX. Beyond the commercial and technical aspects, Pierre has also represented a very human side of the company, with relationships often going far beyond a simple business exchange.

We warmly thank Pierre for his loyalty, his work, and his contribution to SONOSAX over all these years. We wish him every success and happiness for the future.

Continuity at SONOSAX

Tymofiy Ivanchenko at Micro-salon AFC Paris

Following Pierre Blanc’s transition to a reduced role, Tymofiy Ivanchenko will take over many of his responsibilities, particularly in customer communication, technical support, service coordination, and product-related assistance.

Tymofiy has been part of SONOSAX since the end of 2019, working in the technical department and gradually building strong familiarity with our products, workflows, and customer expectations.

During the last ten months, Tymofiy has been working closely with Pierre in order to ensure a smooth and coherent transition. This period has allowed him to take over ongoing matters progressively, while maintaining the continuity and personal contact that are important to SONOSAX.

Some of you may already have met Tymofiy at the Micro-Salon AFC in Paris or at The Pro Audio Show, where he had the opportunity to exchange directly with users, dealers, and partners.

SONOSAX remains a small and highly specialized company, and this continuity is important to us. Our objective remains the same: to provide precise technical support, honest product advice, and reliable service to our users and partners worldwide.

A brighter display

A new touchscreen display for the SONOSAX  SX-R4+ will be soon available, much brighter and visible in direct sunlight (see photo below). We are pleased to offer you an upgrade comprising:

Firmware Update

A new firmware is also in preparation and is currently undergoing testing. This release will correct some bugs and improve overall stability.

SONOSAX SX-R4+ Availability

We are pleased to announce that we are starting a new production run of the SX-R4+, with the first units expected to be available in around six months.

SD Card formatter

As you know, not all SD cards are equal and even new high speed cards may lead to errors (Speed Error).

SD cards are also somehow “ageing” and this error may happen after using cards for a few month only.

We recommend you to reformat your cards on regular basis using the specific SD Card formatter courtesy provided for free download by the root organization “SDcard.org”.

We noticed significant improvements in speed and reliability on pretty old SD cards after using this formatting utility.

SONOSAX SX-AD8+ and AVB

A new firmware allows the SX-AD8+ to connected via AVB to the latest MAC (running on the latest MacOS).

Obviously the SX-AD8+ must be equipped with the optional AVB board, part nr 024291.

IRCAM chooses SONOSAX  SX-AD8+ with DANTE

We are very pleased and honored that IRCAM – Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique – has chosen the SX-AD8+ for their research and developments. Below is what Richard Rentsch and José Miguel Fernández say about their works.

As part of our creative and research project dedicated to human/machine co-improvisation with Somax2 artificial intelligence agents (developed at Ircam, Paris), it is essential to be able to analyze the sound of instruments with a high degree of precision in order to guarantee reliable and musically relevant results in real time.

That’s why we chose the Sonosax SX-AD8+ preamplifier, combined with its Dante extension, for both our studio testing sessions and our live performances.

The remarkable quality of its preamplifiers, the stability of the system, and the portability of the SX-AD8+ allowed for optimal use at two Improtech international festivals, in Tokyo and Paris, as well as during a concert at the Rolex Learning Center at EPFL with pianist Richard Rentsch, in collaboration with José Miguel Fernández and Somax2 AI agents.

Georges Quellet, founder of STELLAVOX, passed away on February 26, 2026.

This man, whom I had the privilege of meeting on several occasions, concealed a profound humanity beneath his initially somewhat austere exterior.

He was as kind as he was approachable, and from the very first moments of our encounters, he showed remarkable generosity of spirit. He knew how to share his convictions and knowledge with infectious enthusiasm, leaving those who knew him with memories of a man of heart and dialogue.

His devices were a source of inspiration to me.

My thoughts go out to his wife, his entire family, and his loved ones.

I met Jeff in the 1980s. He was one of the first users of the SONOSAX SX-S. I remember him as a very friendly and welcoming person with a very open mind.

Totally passionate about sound in cinema, Jeff contributed greatly to its development and helped to advance the profession of cinema sound recording thanks to his curious mind. He had an engaging personality that left no one indifferent.

Jeff also knew how to bring people together, notably by creating the website https://jwsoundgroup.net/  a forum and reference site that is the go-to destination for thousands of users and professionals

Congratulation to Fabrice Aragno for his awards at the Film Festival in Locarno

Filmed mainly on the beautiful Lac Léman (known as Lake of Geneva) from 2023 to 2024, Fabrice Aragno’s latest feature film LE LAC was awarded three time at the international Film Festival in Locarno (Switzerland): Premier prix Jouth Jury, Special mentions Ecumenical Jury, Bocalino d’oro for Best Director.

The film featuring the French actress Clotilde Courau and the professional sailor/racer Bernard Stamm was also presented at several international film competitions such as Doclisboa in Portugal and Nouvelles Vagues at La Roche sur Yon in France.

To preserve the subtle intimacy of the movie and enhance the unique atmosphere of sailing, Fabrice chose to record the entire film at 96 kHz. He recorded the main tracks and some wild tracks on the SONOSAX SX-R4+ using a double M/S, two digital wireless and a Schoeps Mini Cmit on a boom; for additional wild tracks and atmos Fabrice used a SONOSAX SX-M2D2 digitally connected (via AES) to a MINIR82

Expressing the stages of a sensory escape, le lac is a slide towards a here and now, the observation of a present to throw oneself into it physically, totally.

At the end of an endurance race on a large lake, a woman, a man, two human archetypes, united by loss, gradually escape from the world and time, from their times, their durations.

This is a film of few words, a film of sound, a pictorial film. Landscapes filmed as characters, bodies as landscapes.

Slipping on the waterline between life and death, the relationship between the couple explored and expressed in a simple and human way, confronted with the incessant adversities of the elements, is the cinematographic expression of what we have all felt from near or far in our lives.

The third character is Lake Geneva, the backdrop that embraces our shores. The story of this desperate passion to be in the world is unfolding in front of us, under our eyes.

OPENNESS AND INTEGRATION

Thanks to ReaLearn² Versatile Controller Integration for REAPER, the SONOSAX SX-LC8+ can now be used to control your mixes and quickly access functions on Reaper.

ReaLearn² from Helgoboss.org is an instrument plugin for the REAPER Digital Audio Workstation which works in REAPER only. Once installed it recognizes the SONOSAX SX-LC8+ as a MIDI controller and allows users to freely map each faders and buttons. Fader curves can also be calibrated to match the SX-LC8+ engraved scales.

Founded on November 1st, 1977, SONOSAX made its international debut in 1982 during the presentation of our mixing consoles at the AES Convention in Anaheim, California. The immediate success of our SONOSAX SX-S console in the United States quickly made this market our main export destination: by 1983, over 90% of our production was crossing the Atlantic, where the SX-S became a standard among the most prestigious companies and sound recordists.

This American success enabled us to develop our global presence. After nearly five decades, we remain grateful to our clients and users who have trusted us and contributed to building the SONOSAX reputation.

Current Challenges with American Customs TaXEs

The current American administration, considering the Swiss-USA trade balance as “very unbalanced”, has imposed since August 7th customs tariffs of 39% on Swiss products. This situation particularly affects us:

Our economic reality:

• We export around 15% of our production to the USA
• We import about 80% of our components from the USA
• Our tools (computers, software, measurement equipment) are mostly American
• Our digital platforms are managed by the United States

These 39% tariffs, combined with the weakness of the dollar, create considerable challenges for our presence in the American market.

Our Continued Commitment

Although this situation is difficult, it does not threaten SONOSAX’s existence. We guarantee our full support to all our clients in the years to come.

While waiting for a favorable evolution of these customs taxes on swiss products or the discovery of viable solutions, we encourage our clients, as many already do, to visit us in Switzerland for their purchases of new equipment as well as for any maintenance or repair.

This approach also offers them the opportunity to discover Switzerland and enjoy an authentic Swiss fondue!

Thank you Daniel!

For decades, SONOSAX users have been winning César, Bafta, Oscar and other awards for film sound production.

This year is different

Young musician Daniel Blumberg composed all the music for the film The Brutalist, and he also recorded it all with a SONOSAX SX-R4+ recorder and a SONOSAX SX-AD8+ microphone pre-amplifier. This superb music is totally acoustic. What’s more, Daniel travelled extensively to record some musicians at home, others in a jazz club, or in the natural circus of the Carrara marble quarry.

Very close to Brady Corbet, Daniel created the music as the film unfolded. Some musical phrases even replace machine sounds, for example, with a prepared piano…

Daniel also used a SONOSAX SX-M2D2 to work on his computer while on the plane.

We are very proud to have modestly contributed, and from afar, to this epic. Daniel’s way of working makes the most of the possibilities offered by our equipment, with its high musical quality, portability and battery operation – a sublimation!

This exceptional work was awarded the BAFTA and the Oscar for best film score.

For a few years now, he has been working with the SONOSAX SX-R4+ and SX-AD8+ for sound recording. He regularly records, among other places, at the Lausanne Cathedral.

Carnet noir : Chris Newman

We recently learned of the death of Chris Newman, a famous sound engineer in the USA.

Just after receiving his Oscar for Milos Forman’s film in 1984, he approached us and purchased a SONOSAX SX-S mixer. He asked us for a few modifications to be as close as possible to his way of working.

He then made many films, including The English Patient and The Silence of the Lambs, both of which won an Oscar.

A few years later, he ordered a second SONOSAX SX-S from us, his original being very worn out…

Chris was a very endearing and generous character. He passed on his knowledge and experience to many young people in different schools.

Our best thoughts go out to his loved ones and his family.

Like many others, we were saddened to learn of the death of Quincy Jones. 

He leaves us an incredible musical legacy of compositions, arrangements, albums, and concerts across a wide musical spectrum, which I won’t even attempt to summarize.

He also leaves us with the memory of a unique concert at the 25th Montreux Jazz Festival, the only one in which Quincy Jones conducted Miles Davis, accompanied by 2 big bands.

This performance, recorded on July 8, 1991, was one of the last concerts for Miles Davis, who passed soon after on September 28, 1991.

This exceptional concert, along with all the concerts recorded at the Casino de Montreux during this edition, was captured using 48 channels of SONOSAX FD-M4 microphone preamplifiers. That is, up to 48 microphones on stage connected to the SONOSAX rack, with main pre-amplifier outputs connected directly to the 48-track SONY PCM3348 recorder, secondary outputs connected to the Mountain Studio mixing console.

This system allowed the studio assistant to manage the gain of the preamps, while David Richards, Mountain Studio’s renowned sound engineer, could concentrate on the stereo mix. He died on December 20, 2013.

The late David Richards, who worked with David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Iggy Pop, Chris Rea, and many others, and was also a co-producer for Queen, had greatly appreciated this recording system.

It’s immensely satisfying for SONOSAX to have played an active part in this anthology recording.

Our thoughts are with Quincy’s family, friends and loved ones.

I would particularly like to thank you and tell you how much I enjoy recording life in natural environments with your equipment. The SX-R4+ preamplifiers deliver powerful sonic emotions, with wonderful timbres, dynamics and noise levels, in the realms of silence….. With Aurélia Frey, Photographer and Author, we travelled to Iceland in April and May 2024 for 40 days, following in the footsteps of the Breton fishermen who left Paimpol to fish for cod in the icy waters of Iceland.

We recorded and photographed, from before dawn to nightfall, all the landscapes and settings that caught our eye. All this high-quality equipment, properly protected, wired and powered, has proved its reliability in glacier country!

Chris Watson

I’ve recently returned from a film sound recording trip to Zambia and wanted to say how well my recorder performed in very challenging conditions. The weather was very hot and dry with clouds of gritty dust all over my equipment, however my SX-R4, inside it’s case was most reliable.

Analog is not dead

TONHAUS   in Hamburg/Germany, an audio production house specializing in voice recording, sound design and music production for commercials, recently acquired a SONOSAX SX-VT16.

TONHAUS managing Manfred Brunwey, whose discography is impressive, is also a musician, engineer and producer and has operated several recording, mixing and post-production studios.

Together with Horst Püttjer, both of whom have shared a passion for the best sound recordings for many decades, Horst has his roots in studio and communications engineering, it was decided: In addition to studio activities, to record and produce live again, they were looking for a mixer that would give them a real analog sound. A few attempts with the SONOSAX SX-ST quickly convinced them that this was the sound they were looking for.

So they decided on a SONOSAX SX-VT with more input channels than the SX-ST. The small size and light weight of the SX-VT, which makes it easy to transport and install on site, are further advantages that contributed to Manfred Brunwey and Horst Püttjer’s decision

Specifically designed for the ARRI ALEXA35, the SONOSAX AEM-1 offers a fantastic and compact solution, acclaimed by ALEXA35 users for its sound performance and ergonomics, but limited to 2 channels. Adding our SX-M2D2 is the perfect solution for upgrading to 4 channels.

Using a single cable, the SX-M2D2 is powered by the camera and sends two additional analogue channels to the ALEXA35. As the camera’s analogue input has a slightly lower dynamic range, the SONOSAX SX-M2D2‘s limiter can be engaged to protect the ALEXA35’s analogue inputs from overload.

The SONOSAX SX-RX8+ receiver’s holder with rotary controllers is also compatible with the series 8 of our friendly competitors SOUND DEVICES.

As with our SONOSAX SX-LC8+ control surface, the SX-RX8+ features a MIDI-USB interface for controlling gain and other functions on the 8 Series via an 8-pin Binder to USB cable.

Since the beginnings of SONOSAX in 1977, I’ve been extremely privileged to work with Ateliers Du Nord in Lausanne.

Together with Antoine Cahen, we designed the famous SONOSAX SX-S mixer, whose design and quality earned it an almost instant reputation in the cinema industry, particularly in the USA.

Antoine is known to the general public for designing Nespresso machines, Laura Star, his ADN watches, an educational music box, and many other products.

He was awarded the Grand Prix de la Fondation vaudoise pour la culture (FVPC) on 4 November, a well-deserved prize!

SONOSAX and lead time

After the difficult period with Covid and the shortage of components, the situation has improved considerably and we have finally been able to stabilise our production.
Main products are now in stock or with lead times of approx 1 week to 10 days.
Mixing console and special versions require between 1 and 2 months.

SONOSAX SX-RX8+

Available since last summer, the SX-RX8+ is not exactly a Superslot or a Unislot, we call it Minislot !

Built with a minimum of mechanical parts to keep it small and light, it weighs around 900gr with 2 receivers and a removable 98Wh smart battery that keeps the whole system running for a good day of work.

The SX-RX8+ can hold 2 receivers feeding the recorder with up to 8 digital channels (AES31). When connected to the SX-R4+ the 8 rotary knobs can be set in either Gain of Fader mode to control the 8 audio tracks on the recorder. Their Push On switches can be freely assigned by the user to recall specific functions.

As on the SX-LC8+ the SX-RX8+ provides with a USB port carrying a MIDI protocol that can control external devices such as the Sound Devices for example.

SONOSAX SX-DD2

A new firmware has been released for the SX-DD2, offering the possibility of cutting the main output independently of the headphone output.

ARRI / SONOSAX AEM-1

The first feedbacks on the AEM-1 are unanimous in regards to its unprecedented high sound quality. Also much appreciated is its ergonomic design, perfectly matching the camera body without adding much weight and without interfering with the camera operation.
For most ALEXA 35 users, AEM-1 is a game-changer, particularly for small-sized crew or solo operation.

Chris Price

A sound engineer since 1974, then founder of Ambient Recording in Germany, a company manufacturing carbon fiber booms and time code products, he created the company Cinesonics in Portugal in 2006 with his friend Joaquim Pinto.

He was a figure in audio, always in a good mood and ready to joke about anything.
For several years, passionate about oenology, he and his wife had, since 2004, given new life to a wine estate, Cortem, north of Lisbon. This area was his retirement.

I contacted him quite by chance, in September 2018 while I was sailing in Portugal. I was at the Peniche Marina, very close to Chris who was a few dozen kilometers away.

We met at the Marina, and we spent a memorable day together, visiting its region, tasting its wines, some of which won medals, then its wine estate.

That was the last time I saw him, and it is with great sadness that he passed away on November 11th of this year.

All my thoughts are with his loved ones and family.
